Join ISN to remove Japanese barberry from downtown Frankfort! Located next to City Hall, on Main St., this beautiful park is full of barberry and we want to remove the plants and replace them with native species. ISN is partnering with Benzie Conservation District, the Crystal Lake and Watershed Association, and the Department of Environmental Quality to host a “Landing Blitz” in Benzie County! This event is a collaborative outreach campaign to raise awareness about preventing the spread of aquatic invasive species through recreational boating and related activities. Taking preventative steps (i.e. cleaning your boat and live wells) before moving to another lake can make an incredible difference in the battle against invasive species. Please join us on Saturday, July 1, from noon-3:00pm at the DNR’s new Crystal Lake Boating Access Site, just off of M-115 and Mollineaux Road.Volunteers will be on site to deliver information on how to stop unwanted aquatic hitchhikers. Additionally, we will provide demonstrations on how to properly rinse your boat by utilizing the permanent boat washing station on site, owned and operated by the CLWA. Boaters will be greeted with free outreach materials and goodies (like microfiber towels), while supplies last. This is a wonderful opportunity to take great steps towards protecting our region’s natural ecology – and it takes just a few extra moments on what we are hoping will be a beautiful 4th of July weekend! Help make Benzie County’s “Landing Blitz” a success by taking a break on Crystal Lake! These events are being held all over the state during the first week of July – join the invasive species efforts happening in your region! Japanese knotweed, also known as "Michigan bamboo", is a highly invasive plant in our region and it's becoming a major issue for homeowners and land managers. Its incredible root system can damage infrastructure and above ground, it chokes out native vegetation and hurts wildlife habitat. This community training will focus on: How knotweed grows and spreads The best time and methods for controlling knotweed Hands-on demonstrations at a knotweed-infested site Techniques for preventing the spread of knotweed including proper handling of waste. We will begin indoors for a presentation and then venture to a knotweed site for hands-on demonstrations of proper identification and treatment. This training is free and open to anyone with knotweed concerns. Light hors d'oeuvres will be served. RSVPs are required as space is limited. You can register here. When: Saturday, June 3, 2017 - 9:00am-12:00pmWhere: Please meet at West Shore Medical Center, classroom #1 (1465 E. Parkdale Ave., Manistee, MI). Carpooling will be available to our demonstration site, located approximately three miles away.Contact: Emily Cook, ISN Outreach Specialist, (231)941-0960 x20 or email ecook@gtcd.org

Join ISN and the Grand Traverse Regional Land Conservancy as we work to remove invasive baby's breath from Elberta Beach in Benzie County! Spreading easily over northwest Michigan's beaches and dunes, baby's breath crowds out native plants and degrades important habitat. We need your help to restore Elberta Beach back to a diverse, healthy landscape! With a deep taproot, removal is hard work but extremely rewarding. Shovels and other tools will be provided but please bring your own work gloves to protect your hands while using shovels. Long pants are recommended as there is some poison ivy on the beach. We will meet at Elberta Beach parking lot. Water and other refreshments will be provided. As an extra thank you to volunteers, each particpant will receive coupons to both Stormcloud Brewing and the Crescent Bakery. There will also be a drawing at the end of each workbee for additional prizes including discounts to The Cabbage Shed and Frank Z, packets of wildflower seeds, ISN tee-shirts, and more! Feel free to join us at one or all of the following dates!
