  1. Hi, I just had an interesting 2 days working on an important AIS issue and thought I'd share with everyone. DEQ, and DNR staff met with CISMAs and other partners working on European frog-bit (EFB). The workshop was facilitated by Central Michigan University- we have a grant with them to develop/update species strategies for European frog-bit, European water-clover, and water lettuce in addition to a few other deliverables. In particular, we had productive conversations about CISMA efforts and plans to address EFB, on-going research, monitoring techniques, and the potential for state-wide planning for this species. I'll share more on next steps as the project develops.

ISN is partnering with Benzie Conservation District, the Crystal Lake and Watershed Association, and the Department of Environmental Quality to host a “Landing Blitz” in Benzie County! This event is a collaborative outreach campaign to raise awareness about preventing the spread of aquatic invasive species through recreational boating and related activities. Taking preventative steps (i.e. cleaning your boat and live wells) before moving to another lake can make an incredible difference in the battle against invasive species. Please join us on Saturday, July 1, from noon-3:00pm at the DNR’s new Crystal Lake Boating Access Site, just off of M-115 and Mollineaux Road.Volunteers will be on site to deliver information on how to stop unwanted aquatic hitchhikers. Additionally, we will provide demonstrations on how to properly rinse your boat by utilizing the permanent boat washing station on site, owned and operated by the CLWA. Boaters will be greeted with free outreach materials and goodies (like microfiber towels), while supplies last. This is a wonderful opportunity to take great steps towards protecting our region’s natural ecology – and it takes just a few extra moments on what we are hoping will be a beautiful 4th of July weekend! Help make Benzie County’s “Landing Blitz” a success by taking a break on Crystal Lake! These events are being held all over the state during the first week of July – join the invasive species efforts happening in your region!
