  1. Planning is underway for the 2019 field season. Similar to previous years, the DEQ Water Resources Division staff will conduct ~15-20 inland lake surveys for AIS. Please share feedback with Billy Keiper by February 15th. keiperw@michigan.gov
  2. A couple people asked for access to the AIS update powerpoint from the December MISC meeting, specifically looking for the links to RIPPLE materials. The entire ppt is posted here and the RIPPLE links are pasted below. Contact Jo Latimore for more information on RIPPLE. •Website with videos, graphics, and outreach plan: bit.ly/miripple •Connect with RIPPLE on social media: facebook.com/miripple •Order free materials online (free S&H): bit.ly/getmiripple •Articles regarding organisms in trade available for reprint at www.canr.msu.edu/outreach [search for RIPPLE] MISC AIS 2018.pptx
  3. DEQ Water Resources Division is gearing up for AIS field sampling! Here's a list of the 20 inland lakes that will be sampled this year using the snorkeling, wading, and meander survey method. Contact Bill Keiper keiperw@mi.gov if you have any questions. On another note- field observations from DEQ staff yesterday- European frog-bit and Parrot Feather are beginning to emerge. 4. I'm subscribed but didn't get a notification.
  5. I just wanted to share a product that Wisconsin Sea Grant and the Sea Grant Law Center recently put together regarding watercraft decontamination liability concerns. This information may be helpful if you are operating or considering boat was stations. Wisconsin WID Liability Memo.pdfWisconsin WID Fact Sheet.pdf
  6. Survey method includes complete lake-wide shoreline meander and snorkeling at about 5 locations as well as boat launches. We're targeting submerged, floating, and emergent invasive plants but native plant communities are also noted. Also, observations are made recording invasive fish, mollusks, and crayfish; although, targeted sampling using traps or other gear for these taxa is not conducted.
  7. Michigan's Eurasian watermilfoil status and strategy document is finalized and posted on the state website! This document provides in-depth information about Eurasian watermilfoil in the State of Michigan including identification, distribution, management, and control options. Thanks Tom Alwin for picking up a partially complete document, wrangling through much review, and getting it across the finish line. Please feel free to share this resource. Go to the EWM page and scroll to the bottom, click on "status and strategy" http://www.michigan.gov/invasives/0,5664,7-324-68002_71240_73848-368765--,00.html
  8. Hi, I just had an interesting 2 days working on an important AIS issue and thought I'd share with everyone. DEQ, and DNR staff met with CISMAs and other partners working on European frog-bit (EFB). The workshop was facilitated by Central Michigan University- we have a grant with them to develop/update species strategies for European frog-bit, European water-clover, and water lettuce in addition to a few other deliverables. In particular, we had productive conversations about CISMA efforts and plans to address EFB, on-going research, monitoring techniques, and the potential for state-wide planning for this species. I'll share more on next steps as the project develops.

  10. As you may have heard, the aquatic invasive species prevention message "Clean, Drain, Dry" is now trademarked by Wildlife Forever. They donated the TM to the Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies and it will be free to use. See attached press release for more information.
